The year 2023 brought with it a life-changing experience that I never could have imagined. I received an invitation to Italy for the "Emerging Composer 2023" award, a recognition that both humbled and exhilarated me. Little did I know that this journey would not only celebrate my work but also offer me a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from the masters of the craft.
A Journey Begins
As I boarded the plane for Italy, a mix of excitement and nervousness washed over me. I was about to embark on a musical adventure that would shape my career in ways I couldn't foresee. The picturesque landscapes and the rich cultural heritage of Italy provided the perfect backdrop for what lay ahead.
Masterclass with Simon Frangle
Upon arriving in Italy, I was thrilled to attend the masterclasses, one involving Simon Frangle, a renowned composer known for his work on the iconic films of, "Avatar." It was an honor to learn from someone who had contributed to such a groundbreaking cinematic experience and to meet him.
Simon's masterclasses were not just about the technical aspects of composition but delved deep into the art of storytelling through music. His insights into using innovative techniques, and the importance of emotional connection in composition were invaluable. The knowledge I gained in this session, has since become the foundation of my work for I shall never forget the importance of “song chords”.
Cyril Morin: A World of Film Compositions
The learning experience continued as I had the privilege of studying with Cyril Morin, a prolific composer celebrated for his diverse film compositions. Cyril's work spanned various genres and styles, and I was captivated by his ability to adapt and create musical magic across different narratives.
In his masterclasses, Cyril emphasised the importance of versatility in composition and always remaining the artist. He shared stories of his journey in the industry, highlighting the need for adaptability and creative exploration. His teachings broadened my horizons and encouraged me to push the boundaries of my own creativity.
Italy: A Source of Inspiration
Beyond the masterclasses, Italy itself served as a wellspring of inspiration. The rich history, the warm and passionate people, and the romantic towns left an indelible mark on my soul. The music that echoed through the streets during the festival, the architecture and care in every corner, and the flavours of Italian cuisine all played a role in shaping my musical perspective.
A New Chapter
Returning from Italy, I felt not only honoured yet also invigorated. The knowledge and experiences gained from Simon Frangle and Cyril Morin continue to influence my work. I now approach composition with a deeper sense of purpose, using music as a powerful medium for storytelling and emotional connection.
My journey to Italy was more than an acknowledgment of my past work; it was the catalyst for a promising future. It reinforced the idea that music transcends borders and is a universal language that binds us all. With the wisdom imparted by the masters and the inspiration drawn from Italy, I look forward to composing new narratives and making my mark in the world of film and music.
As I reflect on this incredible journey, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunities that have come my way and the remarkable people who have shaped my path. The road ahead may be filled with challenges, but armed with newfound knowledge and experiences, I'm ready to embrace the world of music with open arms, just as Italy embraced me.
